SEO timelines
How long does SEO take? Real timelines from our clients
Not “it depends”. What actually happened, month by month, on the accounts we run, and what makes SEO faster or slower.
The honest answer has two parts. The first enquiries from SEO can come quickly, in the first one or two months, if the work starts with the right quick wins. The big results, where search becomes your largest source of customers, take six to eighteen months and keep growing after that.
What our clients actually saw
| Client | First organic enquiries | Where it got to |
|---|---|---|
| R&S Sandwiches, catering | Months 1 to 2 | 34,131 organic sessions in 21 months. Organic search became the largest channel, at around 1,625 sessions a month |
| Steve Blake Concreting | Months 1 to 2 | 63% of all website traffic from organic search, and 10+ enquiries a month (client reported) |
| OL Plumbing | Months 1 to 2 | Around 15 leads a month from organic search, alongside 15 from Google Ads (client reported) |
| Travis & Co Events | Organic traffic doubled within six months | |
| Vipa Library Supplies, online store | Search impressions up 115% between April and October 2026. Over the 12 months to October 2026, organic search drove 62.8% of the store's online revenue |
Why the first enquiries can come in month one
We front-load the work that pays back fastest, so clients see a return as early as possible:
- Fixing what is broken. Pages Google cannot index, missing titles, slow mobile pages. Many sites have problems that are holding back rankings they have already earned.
- Pages already close to page one. A page sitting at position 11 to 20 often needs only better titles, headings and content to move onto page one.
- Google Business Profile and reviews. For local businesses, the map pack is often the fastest route to calls.
- Conversion tracking. So we can see which searches bring enquiries and double down on them.
A realistic SEO timeline, month by month
Months 1 to 2: quick wins
Technical fixes, tracking, Google Business Profile, and improvements to pages that are close to ranking. The first organic enquiries often arrive here.
Months 3 to 6: building the foundation
Service pages and suburb pages written properly, internal linking, reviews and content that answers what customers ask. Rankings for the main terms start to climb.
Months 6 to 12: compounding
Pages that have built up trust start ranking for many related searches at once. Traffic grows faster than the work put in.
Months 12 and beyond: the foundation pays you
Search becomes a steady channel that does not stop when a budget does. R&S Sandwiches is now in its third year with us.
What slows SEO down
- Spam backlinks from a previous agency. The single biggest drag we see. Bought links can hold a site back for months and have to be cleaned up first.
- A broken or slow website. Quick to fix, but nothing ranks until it is.
- A brand new domain. New sites take longer to earn trust.
- Competitive industries. Law, finance and cosmetic searches take longer and cost more.
- Thin suburb pages. Copying one page fifty times with the suburb name swapped rarely ranks.
- No reviews. For local searches, reviews are a major factor in the map pack.
SEO and AI search
People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot for recommendations as well as Google. The same foundations help with both: clear pages that answer real questions, structured data, and a business that is mentioned and reviewed across the web. Our AI visibility checker shows whether AI tools can read your site at all.
Want this applied to your business? Ask for a free SEO and AI search audit. Our SEO specialist reviews your site and shows you the results on a call, with no obligation.
Common questions
How long does SEO take to work?
For our clients, the first organic enquiries usually arrive in months one to two, because we start with quick wins: technical fixes, pages close to page one and Google Business Profile. Larger results build over six to eighteen months and keep compounding.
Can SEO work in one month?
It can produce early enquiries, especially if the site has problems that are holding back rankings it has already earned. It will not make search your biggest channel in a month. That takes six months or more.
Why is my SEO not working after six months?
The most common causes we find are spam backlinks bought by a previous provider, a slow or broken website, thin copied suburb pages, and no reviews. Each can be fixed, and an audit will show which one applies.
